A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF TRADITIONAL AND CYCLE (BLOCK) BASED TEACHING SYSTEMS IN MEDICAL EDUCATION: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Abstract

This research is devoted to a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of the traditional (parallel subjects during the semester) and cycle (block/module) systems of instruction in medical education. The research was conducted with the participation of the students of groups 23-01 (traditional) and 23-02 (cycle) of the General Medicine programme of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Business and Science. The research methodology includes an analysis of academic performance indicators (GPA) and questionnaires conducted among the students. The results showed that the cycle system has an advantage in the in-depth mastery of clinical subjects and in the concentration of attention, whereas the traditional system has its own advantages in retaining fundamental knowledge in long-term memory and in interdisciplinary integration. The article describes the positive and negative aspects of both systems and gives recommendations on applying a hybrid approach.
