Abstract

This article presents a rational method for detecting bacteria in the blood of patients with septic endocarditis and rheumatism. A quantitative analysis of the growth of Streptococcus viridans on various nutrient media and in chicken embryos was carried out. The most favourable conditions for the growth of streptococci proved to be chicken embryos, as well as Kitt-Tarozzi medium and ascitic semi-liquid meat-peptone agar. In the course of the blood examination of 75 patients, Streptococcus viridans was isolated in 42 cases, with the highest detection rate observed in the infection of embryos. The effectiveness of using blood agar with sodium azide for the isolation of pure bacterial cultures was also established.
