Abstract

Sleep disturbances in children with bronchial asthma are multifactorial and are caused both by the nocturnal symptoms of asthma and by changes in the regulation of respiratory function during sleep. Among the most widespread disorders are insomnia, frequent night awakenings, a decrease in sleep quality, and also obstructive sleep apnea. Prolonged episodes of hypoxia arising against the background of asthma can affect the architectonics of sleep and lead to its fragmentation. In turn, insufficient duration and low quality of sleep can contribute to a worsening of asthma control, increased daytime sleepiness, a decrease in cognitive functions and a deterioration of the child's psycho-emotional state.
