Abstract

This article examines the history of the spread and functioning of the Russian language in Uzbekistan during the Soviet period, analyses the changes in its status and role after the attainment of independence, and also studies the legislative and normative acts regulating the use of the Russian language in modern Uzbekistan. Particular attention is paid to the role of the Russian language as a means of interethnic communication in the conditions of a multilingual society.
