Abstract

The more than half-century history of clinical chemotherapy, along with data on the effectiveness of antitumour agents and their combinations, has been enriched by extensive experience in identifying the complications of drug treatment. Many side effects significantly worsen the quality of life of patients and are dose-limiting in nature, which sets strict conditions when deciding on the modification of the doses of cytostatics, the regimen of their administration and even the possibility of continuing antitumour therapy. The mechanisms of the occurrence of the various types of neurotoxicity have not been definitively established. Peripheral toxic polyneuropathy develops most often, and diffuse or segmental demyelination of neurons or degeneration of their bodies less often. The main link of pathogenesis is damage to tubulin, an intracellular protein that plays a leading role in ensuring the normal physiology of the nervous system.
