Abstract

Ten centuries ago the great encyclopaedic scholar, our compatriot Abu Ali Ibn Sina, said: "The principal skill of preserving health consists in ensuring the moderation of the general factors that are important for human life." In this regard there is no doubt that the personality and the activity of our great ancestor, the encyclopaedic scholar and physician Abu Ali Ibn Sina, constitute a classical national model for the general practitioner. As evidence of our view we may cite more than 40 works of Abu Ali Ibn Sina, chiefly "The Canon of Medicine" and a number of the scholar's philosophical and medical works, and it would be no exaggeration to say that no other people possesses such a figure. Ibn Sina's incomparable, many-sided activity - the work of a physician, surgeon, midwife and pharmacologist, the treatment of people of all ages, the prevention of diseases, his psychology and his philosophy - is a standard of the 21st century to which general practitioners should be brought closer, and we, the compatriots of Ibn Sina, must be worthy of it first of all.
