Abstract

Nonspecific ulcerative colitis (NUC) is a disease that proceeds with autoimmune and inflammatory processes and continues with alternating remissions and relapses. The course of the disease, its prognosis and the effectiveness of treatment differ in every patient, and treatment has to be carried out over many years. This article analyses the significance of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and of C-reactive protein (CRP) as biomarkers of inflammation, and their role in diagnosis, in assessing disease activity and in monitoring the effectiveness of treatment.
