Abstract

This article studies the prospects for the use of biodegradable hydrogels in agriculture. General information about biodegradable hydrogels is presented, and the properties of hydrogels based on cellulose and on GIPAN (hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile) are analysed. Data on the water absorption capacity of hydrogels, their biodegradation in the soil and their agronomic effectiveness are given on the basis of scientific sources. Examples of the use of hydrogels on rain-fed lands (non-irrigated areas), in drip irrigation systems and in horticulture are examined, and their positive effect on saving water, increasing yields and improving soil quality is shown. The analysis of the research shows that biodegradable hydrogels are effective in retaining soil moisture and increasing crop yields, and can serve to ensure the sustainability of agriculture without harming the environment.
