RESULTS OF REHABILITATION MEASURES IN CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY

Abstract
Objective. To assess the results of a rehabilitation programme based on the Bobath method carried out in hospital for cerebral palsy (CP). Materials and methods. The study included 28 children with CP who were undergoing inpatient treatment in a paediatric hospital. Inclusion criteria: being in the inpatient department of our hospital at the age of 2 to 12 years with a diagnosis of CP; the presence of one permanent primary caregiver; the absence of medical or psychotic problems in the caregiver. All patients received Bobath treatment for 1 hour a day, 5 days a week. The musculoskeletal system, the neurological and orthopaedic examination, the measurement of the gross motor function (GMFM) of the patients and the Short Form-36 (SF-36) of the permanent caregivers were assessed at hospital admission, at discharge from hospital and 1 and 3 months after discharge. Results. Post-hospital GMFM scores at discharge and at 1 and 3 months showed a significant increase. The social function and emotional role subscales of the SF-36 increased significantly at discharge. Conclusions. Treatment by the Bobath method is a promising direction in medical rehabilitation, and further randomised controlled trials are needed to assess the effectiveness of rehabilitation techniques.
